| My earliest recollection on my way home from St. Johns School at the corner of Legh St. and Market St., and one that stands out very clearly in my mind, is of seeing a man walking round and round Earlestown Market Square. I was later to learn that his name was Bob Carlisle, and he was repeating a feat of walking one thousand miles in one thousand hours, at not more than one mile an hour. This had been performed some time before for a wager between some very prominent sportsmen in the country, and which had created no end of interest at the time. |  | |

| Canon Whitley, Rector of Newton-in-Makerfield, recognised that the population of Earlestown was growing and there was a need for their own Parish Church. On May 27,1874, Canon Whitley, called a meeting at which it was decided to build a new church in the Earlestown area. |  |

| Recently I was told about an aircrash that occurred in the 1950s near to the Vulcan Village, Newton. I had never heard about this, and so decided to lookup some details about the incident, after a few enquiries I discovered their was indeed such an crash, and that the remains of the aircraft, a Supermarine Attacker, were recently recovered by LAIT, the Lancashire Aircraft Investigation Team.
